Álvaro "Flaco" Fernández on Uruguay's Youth, the Expanded World Cup, and the Future of International Football
Álvaro “Flaco” Fernández, an assistant coach with Uruguay’s U-15 and U-17 national teams, discussed how youth soccer is evolving and how FIFA’s expanded World Cup could reshape international competition. In an interview with Urban Pitch, Fernández—an ex-MLS Designated Player—described the post-2010 era after Uruguay finished fourth at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, when he signed with Seattle Sounders. He said MLS had begun signing younger players for long-term potential, and he later won one MLS Cup and two U.S. Open Cups with Seattle before playing in Chile, Argentina, Qatar, and Uruguay, retiring in 2024 with Plaza Colonia. Now 40, he highlighted challenges such as shrinking attention spans and the influence of social media on development. He also argued that expansion could reduce the number of truly competitive matches for national teams. Fernández earned 12 caps with Uruguay and is a two-time World Cup champion’s youth-development coach.
