Man arrested for flying drone near Dallas Stadium before FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and Jordan
A man was arrested for illegally flying a drone near Dallas Stadium ahead of a FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and Jordan, U.S. authorities announced. Cristobal Torres Alvarez, a 40-year-old Mexican national, was arrested in Arlington on June 27, according to a federal criminal complaint. He faces one count of operating as an airman without an airman’s certificate, a charge that carries up to three years in prison if convicted. The FAA had closed the airspace above the stadium for three hours before and after each World Cup match. Authorities say an FBI agent spotted a drone in restricted airspace around 6:30 p.m. while Argentina was scheduled to play Jordan later that night. Prosecutors say Alvarez admitted he owned the drone, flew it near the stadium, and lacked the required FAA licenses. This is the second federal drone case involving Dallas Stadium, after Luis Mauricio Flores Ordonez was arrested on June 14.
