The Dallas Mavericks have hired Dusty May, the University of Michigan head coach, in a high-profile move to replace Jason Kidd. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday morning that May agreed to take over Dallas, describing it as a major jump from college to the NBA and calling it a strong fit for the franchise’s plans. May comes off leading Michigan to its first national championship since 1989, a win reached in April. The hiring is also linked to coaching the No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, who was named NBA Rookie of the Year for 2025-26. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, May led Michigan to a 64-13 record over two seasons and previously guided FAU to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, including the 2023 Final Four.
