Mayo beat 75-year-old 'curse' to become Gaelic football champions

Mayo ended a 75-year drought and broke what had become known as the team’s “curse” by beating Kerry 1-20 to 1-17 in the 138th All-Ireland men’s Gaelic football final on Sunday at Croke Park. The win, long framed against decades of Mayo defeats in finals—11 losses in 11 since 1989—triggered celebrations across Ireland, including members of Mayo’s diaspora such as Joe Biden, Mark Carney, and Noel and Liam Gallagher. Mayo captain Jack Coyne dedicated the triumph to fans worldwide, saying “Sam is home.” The team returns to Castlebar’s McHale Park for a homecoming Monday evening.
