Mexican designer blends soccer and pre-Hispanic culture ahead of the World Cup

Hugo Rosas is blending soccer and Mexico’s pre-Hispanic culture in World Cup jerseys that reinterpret national identity. His Calados del Alma collection, or Cutouts of the Soul, draws on papel picado and ancient beliefs to produce garments that memorialize traditions. The first sketches featured Quetzalcoatl, a key deity, with Rosas and his brother Andrés emphasizing a hand-crafted, artisanal process. Jerseys use polyester to allow intricate cut patterns and durability; earlier natural fibers failed under weight. Designing a single jersey can take up to three weeks, with sewing and cutting taking eight to ten hours. Since April, 30 Mexclart jerseys have been produced, with demand expected to rise near opening ceremonies.
