Mexico march into World Cup knockout stage and football royalty Ochoa gets fairytale moment

Mexico booked their place in the World Cup knockout stage after a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic, winning all three group matches and finishing top of Group A. Javier Aguirre’s side will return to Mexico City for their Round of 16 tie against a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H or I on June 30. The match opened with controversy as homophobic chanting from Mexico supporters during the first half drew no immediate action from the referee. Mateo Chavez Garcia scored in the 55th minute, followed by Julian Quinones doubling the lead, with Alvaro Fidalgo adding a late third. Guillermo Ochoa played the final 12 minutes in his 153rd Mexico appearance, making it his sixth World Cup.
