New research into basking shark behaviour around Isle of Man
New research into basking shark behaviour around Isle of Man outlines a new effort to better understand endangered basking sharks in Manx waters as sightings rise this year. Researchers say the Manx Shark Foundation was created by shark scientist Gemma Scotts and fisheries officer Tom Morgan, following several quiet years for observations. Morgan said the increase is encouraging but that scientists still need to determine whether there is a specific reason or if the change is simply seasonal. Over two years, working with UK marine charity Mareco, the island’s environment department, Manx Wildlife Trust and Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch, the team used underwater camera surveys, drone monitoring, and analysis of egg cases, alongside research with local anglers. The foundation is now also reviewing sighting records to identify longer-term patterns, with citizen submissions described as valuable. It also aims to address knowledge gaps, including for critically endangered tope sharks.
