NFL refs push back against suspensions after heated Week 4 scenes
The NFL Referees Association plans to challenge suspensions handed to two officials, arguing the league’s penalties were “excessive and inconsistent with past precedent.” In a Tuesday statement, the NFLRA said it will contest the severity of the suspensions and meet with the NFL Officiating Department to discuss disciplinary standards, and also meet with NFL Players Association leadership about on-field conduct and rising confrontation between players and officials. NFLRA executive director Scott Green said officials must act professionally, but accountability should not produce discipline that departs from established precedent. The suspensions include a two-game ban for line judge Jeff Seeman for cursing at Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during a game against the Giants, and a one-game suspension for referee Adrian Hill for confronting Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson after an accidental collision. The league said the incidents were “unprofessional conduct toward a player.”
