Olympics host set to be picked in 2029 as IOC confirms timetable for contest. The International Olympic Committee set a 2029 target to select the host city for the 2036 Olympics after resetting a stalled bidding process that has been strongly pursued by India and Qatar. The decision was agreed during a meeting of the full IOC membership under President Kirsty Coventry, whose term began one year ago after succeeding Thomas Bach. Because Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032) were chosen 11 years in advance, the new plan restores a competitive vote that Coventry’s leadership wants after those hosts were effectively chosen without a rival candidate. IOC member Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović said the process should take shape in March next year, with an official shortlist expected from the executive board. The IOC session for the final 2036 decision is projected for mid-2029, and Qatar is viewed as a leading candidate.
