Pakistan claims India diverting Chenab water to Beas violation of Indus Waters Treaty
Pakistan publicly accuses India of diverting Chenab water to the Beas, calling it a grave violation of the Indus Waters Treaty and applicable international law. The 1960 treaty governs the distribution of rivers in the Indus basin, and Pakistan contends that India’s Chenab-Beas link would transfer 1.9 million acre-feet annually without proper notification or consultations. Foreign Office spokesman Tahir Andrabi asserted the move breaches the IWT and broader treaty principles, including the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. Pakistan also alleges India plans a Salal Dam silt-flushing strategy that is not permissible under the IWT or related agreements. The dispute follows tensions after the IWT’s abeyance last year and recent flood-related concerns raised by Pakistan’s PDMA.
