Pandoh Dam water release alert: BBMB issues warning as water level rises in Beas River
Pandoh Dam water release alert: BBMB issues warning as water level rises in Beas River reports a safety notice from Indian regulators after increased inflow into the reservoir. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) said additional releases will occur on Saturday from the Pandoh Dam, located about 20 km upstream of Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. BBMB officials cited nearly 2,000 cusecs discharged from the dam, with the Beas River flow expected to exceed 6,000 cusecs as a result. Residents along the river are advised to stay away and avoid all water-related activities until further notice, because water levels may rise rapidly after the release. Authorities also cautioned against visiting riverbanks for bathing, fishing, and similar activities. The release is tied to the 990 MW Beas-Sutlej Link Project, which uses a diversion dam for hydroelectric generation and releases excess water during summer and monsoon periods. BBMB referenced past incidents in Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra districts, including flooding, property damage, and loss of life.
