Police officer, woman shot near Notre Dame after football tailgates

A single gunshot during a fight after football tailgates near the University of Notre Dame injured a woman and a South Bend police officer on Saturday night, authorities said. The violence began around 7:30 p.m. ET as crowds left the university’s tailgating areas. South Bend Police said officers heard one shot near Eddy Street and Angela Boulevard and soon found both victims: the woman had a non-life-threatening leg wound, while the officer was injured by either ricochet or shrapnel. Both were taken to a local hospital and are expected to fully recover. Police say the suspected shooter fled west and remains at large.
