Rafting Through Bhutan's Largest River System: Exploring Panbang and Royal Manas
Rafting through Bhutan’s largest river system spotlights Panbang’s growing ecotourism scene and access to Royal Manas National Park via rafting routes on the Drangme Chhu and Mangde Chhu. The article profiles Khenda Adventure, described as the first private rafting and eco-tourism company of its kind in Panbang, operated by 42-year-old Ugyen Tshering, known as “Khenda.” It says Tshering launched the private venture in October 2024, after working with the community-run River Guides of Panbang. The experience includes a 11-kilometre rafting trip on Drangmechhu beginning below Dasho Nishioka Bridge and ending at the crossing point that links Panbang with Royal Manas National Park. The rivers meet at a confluence forming the Manas River basin, noted for remoteness, dense forest, and limited roads or settlements along much of the route. Beyond rafting, guests can try fly fishing for golden mahseer and visit traditional villages and local festivals.
