Cunningham linked the growing tension to Alyssa Thomas twice targeting Caitlin Clark in their most recent matchup, including a knee to the groin and a shove while Clark was down. Thomas received a one-game suspension for the throat shot. Cunningham also referenced a now-deleted social media post by Phoenix that she said mocked Clark, and she criticized the league and referees for not doing enough to prevent repeated cheap shots. She also noted a viral moment where she pointed at DeWanna Bonner for more than 20 seconds.
