Sophie Cunningham shares unflattering claim about Mercury
Sophie Cunningham said the Phoenix Mercury’s problems may run deeper than critics outside the organization, describing what she called an “unfriendliest group” inside the team. Speaking on her podcast “Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson,” Cunningham—who played for Phoenix for six seasons before joining the Indiana Fever—claimed she has heard that Mercury personnel themselves dislike the group’s overall composition this year. Her comments arrive as Phoenix sits at 7-13, leaving it outside playoff contention. Cunningham linked the growing tension to Alyssa Thomas twice targeting Caitlin Clark in their most recent matchup, including a knee to the groin and a shove while Clark was down. Thomas received a one-game suspension for the throat shot. Cunningham also referenced a now-deleted social media post by Phoenix that she said mocked Clark, and she criticized the league and referees for not doing enough to prevent repeated cheap shots. She also noted a viral moment where she pointed at DeWanna Bonner for more than 20 seconds.
