Spain’s World Cup champions returned home for a mass celebration in Madrid, drawing an estimated crowd of almost 2 million. The squad of 26 players and their coaching staff arrived in the Spanish capital on Monday, a day after beating Argentina 1-0 in the final in New Jersey. They met with Spain’s royals before holding talks with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The Prime Minister praised the team for its style, effort and victory, and the squad then traveled by open-top bus for a parade through central Madrid to Cibeles Square. Local media said about 120,000 people attended the ceremony there, and officials estimated 1.8 million across Madrid. Players carried the trophy and wore Somos Campeones shirts, with performances from Aitana, Ana Mena and Lola Índigo. The event followed Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner and marked Spain’s first title since 2010.
