Switzerland foils Canada's party | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Switzerland dampened Canada’s World Cup plans in Vancouver, defeating the Canadians 2-1 on Wednesday to win Group B. The Swiss goals came from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi, who had earlier made an impact after coming off the bench in Switzerland’s 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday. Canada finished second and will enter the knockout stage for the first time in its history, but it will not play its Round of 32 match at home as hoped. Instead, Canada will travel to Inglewood, California, on Sunday to face South Africa. Switzerland will rest for a week and return to Vancouver on July 2 to face one of the eight best third-place finishers. The match followed Canada’s opening win, a 6-0 victory over Qatar, despite Ismael Kone being stretchered off with a broken left leg.
