Texans not expected to play many starters vs. Chargers, per NFL Insider

Houston Texans starters are expected to sit for Thursday night’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Reliant Stadium, following a similar plan to their Week 1 matchup last preseason vs. the Minnesota Vikings, according to KRPC 2 Sports’ Aaron Wilson. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, running back David Montgomery, wide receiver Nico Collins, and veteran offensive linemen including Wyatt Teller won’t play. Coach DeMeco Ryans said only a select group of starters would be held out, without naming them. Players who could be on the first-team offense for at least the opening drive include first-round center Keylan Rutledge and wide receiver Jayden Higgins, though both are likely out for at least one series. Backup Davis Mills and rookie Noah Whittington are expected to start at quarterback and in the backfield. On defense, Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, Derek Stingley Jr., and others are set to sit, while second-round defensive tackle Kayden McDonald and fourth-round linebacker Wade Woodaz should play. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
