The downfall: Julian Nagelsmann out as Germany coach
Julian Nagelsmann has been dismissed as Germany’s national team coach after the team’s poor performance at the 2026 World Cup, according to confirmation from the German Football Association (DFB). The 38-year-old resigned on Friday, about three years after taking charge, and before the contract—set to run until after the 2028 European Championship—would have ended. The DFB said the decision followed Germany’s shock elimination by Paraguay at the tournament. It also referenced complex renewal negotiations in January 2025 that preceded a reported three-hour secret meeting the day before the announcement. Nagelsmann finished with 23 wins in 37 games, losing eight times, including defeats to Spain, Portugal and France, plus losses to Ecuador and Paraguay during the 2026 World Cup. The DFB said it is now in talks with Jürgen Klopp for the vacant role, indicating his willingness.
