Tips to keep pets and wildlife safe this Halloween - Nanaimo News Bulletin

Halloween can be a hazard for pets and wildlife, mainly due to loud sounds, open doors, fireworks, discarded candy, and possible toxin exposure. The BC SPCA’s Kim Monteith says planning ahead during the October-to-December season can reduce fear and unpredictable behavior. Key steps include keeping candy away from pets—human chocolate can be toxic and wrappers can cause choking—keeping pets in a calm, secure area to blunt doorbell and fireworks stress, and ensuring permanent identification such as microchips or tattoos is registered and up to date. The BC SPCA also warns that fake outdoor spiderwebs can entangle birds, urging wildlife-friendly alternatives.
