Unexpected debut was meaningful to John Williams
Green Bay offensive lineman John Williams’ NFL debut carried extra meaning after nearly 18 months of waiting caused by a back injury that sidelined him through his entire rookie season. In Sunday’s pivotal NFC North game against Detroit at Ford Field, Green Bay’s already injury-hit offensive line suffered further setbacks: starting center Sean Rhyan left with an ankle injury, and his replacement Jacob Monk exited with a quad injury on the same series. With only 10 snaps into the game, Williams was thrust in at center without having taken regular reps there during the season, and he did so without snaps with starting quarterback Jordan Love. Still, Williams made an impressive 58-snap relief appearance in the Packers’ 20-17 loss. Selected in the 2025 seventh round, Williams had practiced late in the rookie year while on the physically unable to perform list, then worked at multiple positions during offseason and training camp. Teammates noted his readiness on calls and reads.
