What to know about the search for a missing Mississippi football player reports a search for 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells after he vanished during a July 4 trip to Horn Island. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said Wells was reported missing over the holiday weekend and is being sought on the barrier island, with efforts underway both on land and over the water, continuing after dark on Sunday. Sheriff John Ledbetter urged people who spoke with Wells on July 4 to contact deputies, and requested information about his last known location. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, National Park Service staff at Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the U.S. Coast Guard are assisting, alongside the United Cajun Navy and other volunteers. Wells plays football at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where the athletics department asked the community to join in prayer.
