Whitesboro football makes ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 with last-second TD

Whitesboro made national sports highlights early Halloween Saturday, using a last-second lateral and deflected pass to beat Carthage 31-30 at Chiz Frye Field. The play was ranked No. 3 on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 Plays and aired nationally on the network’s flagship program. The sequence began on Carthage’s 45-yard line when Frank Zupancic threw toward the left sideline and Connor McDonald’s diving attempt resulted in a deflection. Landon Pearsall secured the tipped ball, but defenders swarmed. Trapped during an ankle tackle, Pearsall lateraled awkwardly back to McDonald, who returned 20 yards for the winning touchdown with no time left. Whitesboro (6-3) next faces Auburn in the semifinal, and the Class A final is Nov. 13 at JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse.
