Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas criticized WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert after Engelbert said she received death threats tied to an on-court clash with Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark. The altercation occurred during the Mercury vs. Fever game last Wednesday. Video showed Thomas driving a fist toward Clark’s neck; no foul was called initially, but after post-game review the league upgraded it to a Flagrant Foul 2 and suspended Thomas for one game. Thomas, 34, said she and her family received threats and racial slurs, and the Fever’s Stephanie White called the action “dangerous.” The WNBA said it condemns hate and is coordinating with Phoenix on player protection. The teams meet again July 9.
