World Cup: Over 18,000 kilometres for family's 'once-in-a-lifetime experience'
A family trip totaling more than 18,000 kilometres has become a “once-in-a-lifetime experience” for Newcastle-born Socceroos midfielder Connor Metcalfe and his parents, Grant and Francine. Watching their son in packed stadiums across four host cities, the group is now preparing for Australia’s men’s Round of 16 match against Egypt in Dallas on Saturday (4am AEST). Grant described how the journey began long before the tournament, recalling Connor’s early obsession with football from around ages nine or 10, along with setbacks as a late developer and a smaller player who faced challenges securing places in courses. The family cobbled together a World Cup support crew after the Socceroos squad announcement in early June, with stops including Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco, plus Las Vegas this week en route to Texas. Grant highlighted the tournament highlight: Connor’s debut goal against Türkiye to give Australia a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute.
