Young footballer's death ignites safety fears
The death of a young footballer in a tackle incident has raised new safety concerns about how cricket pitches are covered at suburban grounds. Nathan Fitzgerald, 27, suffered critical head injuries during an Australian rules football match at Lalor Recreation Reserve in Melbourne’s north, then died in hospital on Monday night. Fitzgerald, who played for Epping Football Netball Club, collided heads with a teammate while attempting to tackle an opponent on Saturday. The incident was followed by additional impacts, including what witnesses described as a knee or boot to the head, before a head-first landing on a covered cricket pitch. The pitch sits in the center of the oval and is covered with a multi-layer synthetic surface during football games. While the City of Whittlesea said the covering meets relevant safety standards under AFL/Cricket Australia performance requirements, Epping president Luke De Vincentis said the case may show the synthetic turf is not enough and called for further review. Emergency services treated Fitzgerald immediately, and club support continued over the weekend.
