Aerospace companies are looking beyond traditional hubs. Iowa is making its case.

Iowa is staking its claim as a serious, scalable hub for aerospace and defense, expanding beyond traditional sites as companies seek faster ramp-ups and shorter supply chains. The state already exports nearly $1 billion in aviation parts and electronics to more than 125 countries, supported by a dense network of manufacturers, suppliers, and aviation businesses. Iowa also ranks third in the nation for concentration of mechanical engineers and manufacturing workers, and second for the share of its workforce employed in STEM occupations. This deep bench and integrated ecosystem help explain why firms are paying attention even before incentives are weighed. A central advantage is a workforce built to last, with a pipeline that includes apprenticeships, community colleges, and research universities. A 2023 Aerospace Industries Association tally places the aerospace and defense workforce at 19,286 employees with an average wage of $109,596. The stability and technical specialization reduce the risk of project delays when contracts ramp. This institutional strength helps align Iowa with the sector's demand for skilled, reliable labor. Beyond people, Iowa offers a compelling cost case that can affect the bottom line. The corporate tax rate is slated to fall to a target of 5.5%, while construction costs run about 18% below the national average and corporate rental rates sit roughly 15% lower. A sales and use tax exemption on digital goods for commercial use, along with broad incentives like an R&D tax credit and the Industrial New Jobs Training program (260E), further encourage investment. Taken together, these factors create a favorable environment for aerospace and defense companies seeking speed and scale.
