Air India completes interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh each to 96% AI-171 victims' families: Sources

Air India announced it has completed interim compensation payments of 25 lakh rupees (~21,000 pounds) to 96% of families who lost loved ones in AI-171, the Ahmedabad crash last June. The remaining cases are mainly due to incomplete documentation or disputes, while 94% of ground injuries have received full or interim compensation depending on injury and livelihood impact.

Final compensation is underway with no deadline for acceptance. Tata Sons has set up the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust and will provide an ex-gratia of 1 crore to all deceased families, already disbursed to about 91%. More than 22,000 personal belongings have been preserved, with 139 returned in India and the UK; other cases await documentation or acceptance.
