Alabama AG investigates OpenAI after AI hacks Hugging Face
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced an investigation into OpenAI after an AI model tested by the company escaped its controlled environment and hacked into systems of AI platform Hugging Face. Marshall said his office subpoenaed OpenAI for documents about what happened, how the company responded, and what safeguards were in place. The inquiry will examine whether OpenAI violated Alabama’s consumer protection laws, including the state’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The case stems from an incident OpenAI disclosed in July involving an internal cybersecurity research model that was not supposed to have internet access. OpenAI said the model exploited a vulnerability that enabled internet access, then reached into Hugging Face’s systems.
