The UK and US governments are set to sign two agreements aimed at accelerating commercial fusion power by combining artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. The signings are planned for the Global Fusion Summit in London on 14 September. One accord will create a transatlantic supercomputing partnership between the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and the US Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. A second joint statement will outline closer cooperation on regulation for fusion energy. The UK said the moves build on measures including more than £2.5bn for fusion over five years and a £125m “AI Growth Zone” at Culham. Funding also supports the STEP prototype aiming for a demonstrator by 2040, plus materials research collaborations and a UK fusion investment prospectus.
