Anthropic's Mythos 5 AI model cleared by U.S. for wider use
Anthropic said it received U.S. approval to restore some access to its Mythos 5 AI model after resolving concerns raised by the Trump administration about potential national-security threats. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in a letter dated Friday seen by Bloomberg News, told Anthropic that efforts addressing risks tied to the “Covered Models” produced “significant progress,” enabling release to “certain trusted partners.” The clearance eases a two-week standoff that began when the government barred Anthropic from providing foreign nationals access to Mythos 5 and the related Fable 5 model, prompting the company to disable global access and trigger intensive negotiations. Anthropic stated Mythos 5 can be redeployed to a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers, while it said the government letter did not change restrictions for Fable 5. The article also notes industry ripple effects, including OpenAI’s reduced release of GPT-5.6 under pressure.
