Applebee's rival to bring back original store concept from its founding in 1975
Chili’s, the casual dining chain founded in Dallas in 1975, is reviving its original retro identity as competition with Applebee’s continues. Brinker International CEO and Chili’s president Kevin Hochman told CNN the remodel will target “Chili’s more Chili’s,” including red-leather booths associated with the 1990s and the return of colorful tiled tables on both the interior and exterior. The company said redesigned tile tables will omit the grout that once made them harder to clean, and walls will feature retro details such as an image of the original Chili’s menu from more than five decades ago. Chili’s tested the concept in Dallas with four prototype restaurants. Starting next year, it will remodel 10% of its 1,200 US locations annually until they have the retro look. The article also notes nostalgia promotions by Pizza Hut, including a Throwback Value Menu priced from $3, and a limited-edition Dinner Service NY Streetwear Collection.
