Bill Gates, alarmed by AI, has policy ideas he wants to discuss with China's Xi Jinping

Bill Gates said he wants to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year to propose global efforts to reduce risks from artificial intelligence. Speaking to Reuters from San Francisco on Aug. 26, the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist suggested China could be willing to restrict releases of potentially dangerous AI models if the United States takes the first step. Gates said he will seek discussions on monitoring AI’s ability to create molecules and carry out biological attacks without blocking legitimate tech progress. He tentatively scheduled the conversation for November, during Xi’s next China trip. Gates also called for a new international organization to manage AI, drawing comparisons to nuclear inspections and aviation rules, and criticized the lack of leadership on potential harms.
