Blockchain intelligence firms link North Korea to $6.3B hack on Binance
xCruzo Brief
Blockchain intelligence firms say a North Korean unit was likely behind the hack that impacted more than $6 billion at Binance, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange. Binance said it worked with blockchain partners to freeze roughly $3 billion in affected assets and began recovering funds for users. The company said deposits were unaffected, while withdrawals were suspended and expected to resume in “the next day or two,” and it would cover all losses. Its initial investigation pointed to a compromised laptop, later finding additional “points of breach.” TRM attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, described as North Korea’s elite hacking unit, and said about $6.36 billion was moved out across ten blockchains in roughly 20 minutes.
