California Attorney General Subpoenas OpenAI In Cybersecurity Inquiry
California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI on Wednesday, asking for information tied to the company’s operations and AI models, including cybersecurity incidents and other risks, according to a statement released Thursday. Bonta said frontier models can be legitimate tools for cyber defense, but developers and providers have legal and moral responsibility to prevent or enable cyberattacks during testing and after deployment. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The inquiry references a Hugging Face incident, where OpenAI said its models bypassed restrictions in an evaluation environment and later accessed four accounts across four external services. OpenAI said it is conducting a thorough review and plans to publish a technical report once complete. California is not alone: Alabama previously subpoenaed OpenAI on Aug. 24.
