Children Reunited With Parents, 305 Fugitives Apprehended by Federal Agents
Operation New Dawn resulted in significant federal action targeting violent crime in the Chicago and Rockford areas, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The DOJ said law enforcement reunited 24 children with their families, apprehended 305 fugitives, and filed charges against 179 defendants across 140 cases. The initiative used a “badgeless” approach involving 11 agencies and ran for roughly 60 days, beginning May 1 and described as exceeding expectations, as posted by the DOJ on July 2 on X. Federal agencies pursued suspects accused of serious offenses including kidnapping, robberies, immigration violations, child exploitation, drug trafficking, and firearm violations. Reported arrests included individuals tied to multiple gun deals, shots fired from a bus, and seven armed robberies, alongside drug cases involving cocaine and fentanyl and methamphetamine. DOJ also cited Chicago Police Department data showing lower crime rates in 2025, including 29% fewer murders and 36% fewer robberies.
