China's soil is disappearing and scientists are just starting to understand why that is happening

China’s soil erosion study traces a pattern along the Hu Line, the diagonal separating the crowded southeast from the arid northwest. Researchers at Yunnan University mapped erosion from 2000 to 2020, classifying six zones—four severe and two mild—whose locations align with that demographic boundary. They link heavy rainfall, steep terrain, and farming to continual topsoil loss that threatens crops and soil fertility across the country. The center of erosion drifted southwest toward Yunnan, where deep valleys and strong downpours amplify slope loss. The study ties shifting land use to this movement, underscoring the need for conservation in the Hu Line region and policies to halt further soil depletion.
