Chippy crowned best in Midlands for its friendly welcome and quality takeaways

A Nottingham family’s chippy has been crowned top in the Midlands at the English Fish & Chip Awards. Wollaton Fish Bar, taken over by the Georgiou family 18 months ago, won best fish and chip shop in the Midlands at the inaugural event, beating 17 finalists including Carringtons (Nottingham), Kelvin’s Fish Bar (Ravenshead), Rolleston Fish Bar (Arnold) and Angell’s Fisheries (Newark). Another venue, Best of Ocean Fish and Chips in Long Eaton, received a highly recommended mention in the same category at a ceremony in Manchester attended by 400 guests. The shop’s manager, Christos Georgiou, said new customers followed the 2025 Nottingham England Business Award win. He attributed success to quick but professional service and weekly fresh deliveries, while noting Brexit, the Covid pandemic and the Ukraine war have raised costs and reduced demand.
