Clarke resigns in wake of Scotland's World Cup exit

Steve Clarke resigned as Scotland men’s head coach after the team’s exit from the 2026 World Cup. The Scots finished with three points from nine in Group C, placing behind Brazil and Morocco with a minus three-goal difference. That outcome left Scotland outside the top tier for progression, since only the eight best third-placed teams advanced to the last 32. Clarke stepped down on Sunday, ending his seven-year tenure that began ahead of the previous tournament cycle. Scotland’s first World Cup finals appearance since 1998 had been under his leadership, and he also delivered three out of the last four major tournaments. Scotland FA chief executive Ian Maxwell thanked Clarke for his “record-breaking contribution,” while Clarke’s open letter referenced his 62-year-old farewell to players and supporters. The search for a new coach will begin ahead of the Nations League campaign starting in September.
