Colin Farrell drives into S2 of PI/sci-fi 'Sugar' series
Colin Farrell’s Apple TV+ thriller Sugar vaults into Season 2 with a bold shift that reframes its lead, John Sugar, as a sentient alien rather than an android. In a Zoom interview, Farrell confirms that Sugar is a non-human life form from a distant planet who loves the human experience, promising a new dimension while preserving the show’s core energy. The return also nods to his distinctive trappings—his vintage Corvette Stingray, his suits, and his Los Angeles haunts in Bel Air and Pacific Palisades. The new season broadens the backdrop to a grittier, night-driven LA, contrasting with Season 1’s affluence. Apple TV streams Sugar on June 19.
While the conceit remains centered on Sugar, the second season introduces heightened danger and deeper emotional stakes, with his humanity tested by unfamiliar threats that threaten his sanity. Farrell describes a stylistic shift toward a more working-class LA, while preserving the car, suits, and signature aura that anchor the character. Viewers will see the same enigmatic lead navigate new moral and psychological terrain, balancing wonder with vulnerability as he confronts loyalty, belonging, and the meaning of humanity. That tonal continuity—even as visuals and stakes intensify—helps the show maintain its core identity while inviting fresh scrutiny of Sugar’s extraordinary origins.
