Europe is expanding its publicly funded AI supercomputing network with a €387.8 million ($449.4 million) system ordered from France’s state-owned Bull, in a bid to narrow the region’s computing gap with the U.S. and China. Bull says it is its largest contract ever. The European Union’s EuroHPC selected Bull to build LUMI-AI, the sixth machine under its AI Factories programme, to be installed at Finland’s LUMI supercomputing center alongside the existing LUMI system. Startup is expected in the second half of 2027, funded equally by EuroHPC and the LUMI AI Factory consortium. AMD will supply chips, IBM storage, and Nokia networking.
