Five USC Trojans Newcomers Who Appear Primed for Immediate Impact on Defense
USC’s 2026 defensive rebuild is getting multiple fresh faces, with coach Lincoln Riley pressing for a defense that can match his offense’s momentum. The Trojans hired former Big 12 defensive coordinator Gary Patterson as defensive coordinator this offseason, and also made key additions via recruiting and the transfer portal. Among the newcomers are 2026 top recruit Luke Wafle, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound defensive end from New Jersey arriving with standout production including 23 sacks as a senior and a three-sack showing in the Navy All-American Game. Cornerback Jontez Williams transfers from Iowa State after a 2024 All-Big-12 second-team season. Defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren joins from Michigan State as a two-year starter, highlighted by line coach Skyler Jones for toughness and leadership.
