France's Mbappé Scores 17th, 18th World Cup Goals, One Behind Messi
France’s Mbappé keeps tightening the race for World Cup scoring records as he netted his 17th and 18th tournament goals in France’s 3-0 rout of Sweden on Tuesday in East Rutherford. The two goals moved him to within one of Lionel Messi’s overall World Cup record of 19, with Mbappé tied for the Golden Boot race at six goals in the tournament. The match kicked off at 5 p.m. under 90°F (32°C) heat, with Lucas Digne even doused by a sprinkler during a first-half hydration break. Mbappé scored in the 45th minute via a give-and-go with Ousmane Dembélé and again in the 74th minute from Michael Olise. Despite being substituted off in the 85th minute, Mbappé’s 18 goals in 18 World Cup games maintain a faster clip than Messi’s 29 appearances. The win also came after coach Didier Deschamps returned to the sideline following his absence for his mother’s funeral.
