From AI Assistants to AI Companions: Why Consumer AI Is Becoming More Personal
Consumer AI is shifting from one-off question answering toward systems that feel continuous and more personal. Early generative tools were prompt-based: ask, receive an answer, and move on. Newer “AI companions” build the experience around ongoing conversation, including the ability to carry preferences and context from earlier chats so interactions don’t feel repetitive. The article contrasts assistants—focused on completing tasks like drafting emails or organizing schedules—with companions that emphasize what happens between tasks, sometimes using chosen characters, tone, voice, avatars, roleplay, and longer-term memory. It notes that memory changes user expectations but raises trade-offs around what is stored, for how long, and what control users have.
