Gaunt 'zombie fish' draws researchers to study habitat in Lake Superior's deepest point
The gaunt zombie fish draws researchers to Lake Superior's deepest point to study its habitat and health. State biologists and fish pathologists from Michigan State University will join a June expedition near Superior Maximus, Lake Superior's deepest point, to examine siscowet lake trout living 600 to 1,320 feet deep and determine why many appear emaciated. The DNR notes the proportion of these thin fish rose from about 3% of catches in 2015 to roughly 20% in 2024 and 2025, prompting concern about possible pathogens. While researchers call the fish zombies, officials say there is no contagious disease. The effort aims to inform fisheries management and ecosystem understanding across the Great Lakes region, helping protect lake health and guide anglers and residents.
