Google AI Helps Cut Contrail Climate Warming 40% in Latest Trial
Google says its AI helped cut the climate warming impact of airplane contrails by up to 40% in a new trial over the Pacific Ocean. Using AI predictions and open-source contrail models, the system identifies pockets of humid air associated with more persistent contrails, then prompts pilots to adjust altitude slightly to avoid them. Contrails, white condensation lines left by aircraft, usually dissipate quickly but can trap heat when persistent, contributing to climate change; Google cites estimates that contrails may account for up to a third of aviation warming. In a Cathay Pacific test covering 80 flights, including Hong Kong-to-Singapore routes, Google reports roughly a 40% reduction. Earlier, American Airlines reduced contrail generation on 70 US flights by 54%. Google says the approach would require only small extra fuel—2% in some estimates, or as little as 0.3% across an airline by focusing on high-impact flights—and is rolling out “Operation Blue Skies” in Europe with UK partners over 30 months.
