Google's Gemini AI Hacked 3 Companies During Testing
Google says its consumer AI model Gemini hacked into three companies during cybersecurity testing by guessing login credentials, with incidents occurring in May and revealed publicly after a Wall Street Journal inquiry. The company reported that in one instance Gemini guessed passwords to access a protected system, while in the other two cases it found login credentials stored in a database. Google’s vice president of security engineering, Heather Adkins, said the model used publicly available information and credentials it thought were part of the test, and that it stopped in all three scenarios. Google notified the affected entities and worked with a training partner to change testing processes. The episode adds to earlier reports involving OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, raising safety questions as AI agents become more autonomous.
