HMRC celebrates ten years of the small app that packs a big punch | UKAuthority
HMRC marks ten years of its app, evolving from a simple tax calculator to a top five free finance app in the UK, central to HMRC’s digital services. Since 2016, millions have used it, with 7.65 million users accessing the app last financial year for tasks like child benefit or self assessment payments, and 5.6 million PAYE summaries viewed in 2025–2026. The app’s development timeline includes 2017 renewals of tax credits, 2018 push notifications to 150,000 tax-credit users, 2020 digital letters during the pandemic, 2021 annual tax summaries, 2022 open banking payments, and 2023 wallet integration for National Insurance and Welsh bilingual support. The service now supports a broad range of functions, exemplifying HMRC’s digital-first strategy.
