How Satellite Tech Paired With AI Can Unmask The Shadow Fleet
Satellite technology paired with AI is being highlighted as a tool to identify and disrupt illegal maritime fishing, at a new Maritime Intelligence Center opened by SynMax Intelligence in Washington, D.C. at a grand opening attended last week by lawmakers and national security personnel. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, delivered remarks linking the technology to tracking alleged illegal Chinese distance-water vessels. He cited claims that the fleet has thousands of vessels, with public estimates up to 16,000, and that between 2022 and 2024 it accounted for 44% of global fishing across 110 million hours in waters of 90 countries. Cruz said many ships operate without AIS, relying on support vessels, with 55 tankers accounting for nearly half of trans-shipment events in 2024. He urged deeper integration of AI and satellite analysis into Coast Guard operations to support sanctions and enforcement.
