Looming ballot deadline complicates GOP appeal of Missouri redistricting decision

Late Friday, Missouri Republicans filed a U.S. Supreme Court appeal that could determine whether the GOP can use Missouri’s 2025 redistricting map for the Nov. 3 general election. The request, submitted by Republican Attorney General Catherine Hanaway for Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, asks that the revised congressional map—used to nominate candidates in eight districts on Aug. 4—be the controlling boundaries. The filing effectively accepts an issue about whether voters will see a referendum on the gerrymandered map. Thursday, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled People Not Politicians had enough signatures and ordered Hoskins to run the election using 2022 and 2024 boundaries. If the stay is granted, the election is expected to shift from six Republicans and two Democrats to a likely seven GOP seats. Justice Brett Kavanaugh set a noon Monday deadline for a response.
