Noah Lyles’ season ended early ahead of the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships with a strained muscle that worsened and continued to affect his training. The American sprinter, who matched his 100m personal best of 9.79 seconds in 2026, had been expected to compete for a $10-million prize pool but will instead shift his focus to defending his Olympic 100m title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games on home soil. Lyles said 2027 will be the “building block” for 2028, and while he won’t race in Budapest, he plans to attend. After running 9.76 seconds in a wind-assisted semifinal and winning the final in 9.79, he reiterated he wants no limits on challenging Tyson Gay’s 9.69 U.S. record from 2009.
